Mythago Wood, however, is the dream that stays behind. FORGOTTEN BOOK: MYTHAGO WOOD by Robert Holdstock, 1984. A lot has been said about this book, almost all of it positive. Robert Holdstock's Mythago Wood Cycle (or as it is also known, the Ryhope Wood series) is one of fantasy literature's truly unique creations. As he spends more time in the presence of Ryhope Wood, the mythical archetypes dredged from his collective unconscious (myth + imago = mythago) come to life. Rob was a World Fantasy Award-winner for best novel, with Mythago Wood, and best novella, with 'The Ragthorn', co-written with Garry Kilworth. Mythago Wood is a story wrapped up like an onion, with layers upon layers that are slowly removed until the reader discovers the amazing core of the story being told. Mythago Wood had quite the impact on me as a fantasy reader, and I suspect he had way more of an impact on fantasy than most US readers realize.
